Hello!

I’m Joel Cross

About

Mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Southampton. Versatile and committed individual who enjoys a challenge, demonstrated by achieving a Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE). Team player but also confident to pursue activities on an individual level. Played singles and doubles tennis at club level for a number of years as well as being an assistant coach with LTA level 1 qualification. Proactive, resourceful and forward-thinking with a drive to deliver efficiently and exceed requirements. Inquisitive and enjoys researching to gain a diverse knowledge base as well as confident in practical skills, which are used in combination with logical reasoning to problem solve effectively.

I chose to study mechanical engineering because I see it as an investment in my future which will provide a robust platform for my career and visions of the future. It has proven to be a very versatile degree incorporating areas of law, economics and business whilst improving my fluency in a variety of software packages. Also, it has given me in depth knowledge about materials, fluid dynamics and electronics which can be applied to everyday objects, processes and situations. Knowledge of this gives me the confidence and potential to excel in many areas across multiple disciplines.

In addition to mechanical engineering I also have a keen natural interest in geography, the environment, construction and infrastructure which has led me to research and increase my knowledge with respect for both the natural and built up areas of world we live in. I am extremely passionate about sustainable initiatives!

During my life and future career it is my aspiration to be involved in projects which can positively impact our planet and to witness its transformation into a better world for human beings as well as nature. I am excited by the prospect of earth’s future becoming net zero and being powered sustainably through renewable sources.

Outside of academia, I have participated in the Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme which has required excellent teamwork skills, dedication, as well as endurance. These transferable skills have been exceptionally useful during my engineering degree and have facilitated working on the many group and multidisciplinary projects required to achieve a successful solution. I am also motivated to participate and succeed in many sports including football, skiing, and tennis. I have competed in mens doubles and won the league for five consecutive years for the Grange LTC.
